Veteran Success Story: Jonathan Landon

U.S. Army, 28 years
Chaplain
Department of Veterans Affairs
Roseburg, VA

Veteran Jonathan Landon served in the Army for 28 years prior to retiring from active duty service. Since he had not performed a job search in decades, Mr. Landon hoped to find career assistance for Veterans seeking civilian employment.

Through networking, Mr. Landon learned about the VA for Vets program and reached out to a Regional Veteran Employment Coordinator (RVEC) at the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA). The RVEC provided tips on beginning a new job search and creating an account on USAJobs. The RVEC also recommended that Mr. Landon contact a VA for Vets Career Coach who could assist with resume building, interview preparation, and searching for federal positions.

A Chaplain position at VA became available with a short window for applications. Mr. Landon contacted a Coach through the VA for Vets Virtual Collaboration Workspace to receive support with preparing his application. The Coach helped Mr. Landon tailor his resume in the federal format. She provided assistance with translating his military skills and experience into civilian skills that related to the position description.

Through her guidance, Mr. Landon submitted a competitive application that resulted in an interview. He applied the interview techniques he learned from the RVEC and Career Coach and felt confident and prepared for the interview. As a result, he received a job offer for the position.

“The job is a perfect fit for my education, experience and personal talents,” Mr. Landon said of the position. “There’s no doubt in my mind that the help of my VA for Vets Career Coach was absolutely critical to bringing about this most-blessed outcome.”
