Media Services’ Carmen Cordoba says the Veteran Employment Services Office (VESO) was instrumental in helping her find the right employee. The acting chief of VA Central Office’s Media Services Division and also chief of its Photography and Video area, Cordoba shares why she engaged VESO when she was looking for a new photographer for her team.

AS A SUPERVISOR, WHY WAS IT IMPORTANT FOR YOU TO HIRE A VETERAN AS PART OF YOUR TEAM?
As a Veteran, hiring a Veteran meant, first, providing an opportunity for someone to continue to serve the way it was provided to me. I knew that there was a certain standard of work, character, capability and commitment that is generally found in a Veteran. It’s a mindset of, “Whatever the work is, regardless of the circumstance, we’ll get it done and get it done to the best of our ability.” I knew he or she would be a team player and be able to work with a diverse group of people, because that’s what we had on active duty. And I knew they would understand the mission and take it seriously, because they understand the people we serve. It’s more than a paycheck, more than a position, it’s a connection and a perspective that Veterans have that no explanation of “Why we do this” is needed.

WHY DID YOU REACH OUT TO VESO TO HELP FILL THE POSITION ON YOUR TEAM FOR A PHOTOGRAPHER?
